A year ago this month, ELVES started operating as the approved compliance scheme for end-of-life vehicles in Ireland. Our first year of operations has seen us make good progress on establishing an ELVES Network of permitted scrapyards (Authorised Treatment Facilities – ATFs) all over Ireland. We now have a strong geographic coverage with 48 ATFs in the Network.
In the second half of 2017, we put a lot of effort into raising public awareness about who we are, our ATF Network, and how to scrap a vehicle. We have been out at events with our Heinkel car, been getting great exposure in newspapers across the country, and have been growing our Facebook page following. We have only just started and plan to build on our 2017 successes in the coming year.
Alongside building these strong foundations, we have been working on other targeted projects all aimed at helping Ireland meet its ELV commitments, such as streamlining the administrative side of scrapping a car, promoting dismantling, assisting with downstream re-processing (metal recycling), and documenting the reuse, recycling and recovery of parts and materials.
With the work done so far, we are anticipating that the ATFs in our network will meet target for 2017.
